Established in October last year, Jenny’s Laksa is Nonya laksa stall in Ang Mo Kio. Opened by Glen Liang, a former crane operator from PSA, Glen wanted to pay homage to his mother’s culinary skills.
The recipe was passed down from his grandmother. Glen started cooking at the age of 15, and finally mastered the art of cooking laksa at 21 years old. He cooks at the stall, while his mother prepares the ingredients, and his elder sister, Sabrina, takes orders and serves.
As compared to laksa that you commonly find in Singapore, the rempah at Jenny’s Laksa is lighter on the palate, yet still aromatic and flavourful. Glen adheres strictly to his grandmother’s recipe, so as to keep the taste as authentic as possible to what Nonya Laksa is supposed to taste like. Coconut milk is added to accentuate the fragrance, but the amount is controlled to ensure that the rempah isn’t too overwhelming.
You can either pick laksa with shredded chicken ($2.80), or cockles ($2.80), and each bowl is served with beansprouts, quail eggs, tau pok, and slices of fishcake. There’s also the mixed option where you get both shredded chicken and cockles at an affordable price of $3.30.
Everything is prepared from scratch, and there are two options for the sambal here – manageable level of spiciness, and super spicy. Glen closes the shop at 3pm daily, and will start preparing the rempah for the following day. No MSG is added in the process.
Despite being located at a coffeeshop that’s not eye-catching, and a little tough to find, we feel that the Nonya Laksa here is worth traveling for! There isn’t many Nonya hawker stalls in Singapore which is priced so affordably as well. Hope Jenny’s Laksa will continue whipping up delicious bowls of authentic Nonya Laksa and carry on the Peranakan heritage!
